Happy Notes!

Posted by: • Date:

Been working on updating some of my older icons to work better with those systems that can use 512px images in QuickView. Trying to update some of the styles, as well. Does anyone out there still like the old glossy, plastic-y 3D style or have y’all moved on?

I’m a bit short on time today so I’ll catch up tomorrow and write something a bit more substantive. Meantime, Enjoy!

A Life Without Music is Like…

Posted by: • Date:

On a beautiful June day in 1981, I was the picture of happiness. My hubby and I were out with friends frolicking around Lake Erie on their new boat, enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, good company and conversation about each of our dreams and plans for the future. For myself, after having endured a very difficult, challenging childhood, I was ecstatic about how things had come together in my life. Married for four years by that time, we still felt and acted like newlyweds and on top of that, I was finally well on my way to reaching my ultimate career dream of being a successful recording engineer/producer in radio and advertising. Within a few short hours though our lives were about to drastically change.

Disembarking from the boat and without any forewarning, I suddenly keeled over landing flat on my face on the dock. Although completely flat on a solid, stable surface, I was sure that I was in the process of falling from an enormous skyscraper. (Think Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo.) I’ll save you from the long, gory details but the upshot was that at the relatively young age of 27, I had suffered Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss that day which left me completely and permanently deaf in my left ear and with a 70% hearing loss in my right ear. My career was over in that instant.

This is not a blog for self-pity, though. If you’ll recall, the underlying message of this blog is about surviving – and more than that, it is about not merely surviving, but thriving. Step-by-step, growing with the journey in ways that I had never dreamed, expected, or planned, I have never spent a moment mourning what I did not have nor what I once had but lost because I’ve always felt blessed for what I do have. So while I may no longer have music in my life in the manner that I once knew it, I have such rich and vivid memories that I can bring them to mind to enjoy again and again to relive the emotional feeling I used to derive from hearing live music. I am still able to feel the music and what’s more, I can now create happy little visual images that remind me of the joy of music. So what’s there to mourn? The truth is, happiness really IS a decision we each have within our control no matter what hurdles may also stand before us.

I don’t know if my attempts at diversity are exactly politically correct, but this assortment of avatar/icons that I dug out of my digital toy bin tonight are each proud of their heritage and hope to bring a smile to your face. If you choose to adopt them for your own, take them out for a walk in the woods once in a while and you’ll have a friend for life…

Hey, I’m sick and retired. I don’t gotta make sense all the time, do I? 😉

Fox Spokane (Copper Art Deco Icons)

Posted by: • Date:

A tiny architectural detail carved into the façade of the fabulous Art Deco building which originally housed The Fox Theatre in Spokane, Washington (and which now houses the Spokane Symphony Orchestra) was the starting inspiration for this series. Evidence of this is only reflected in my version of the building as the User’s Home Icon and on a Diary Application Icon. What developed from that detail though is a multi-part set of brushed-satin copper icons with an art-deco touch which includes icons for basic system replacements, folders, devices, applications, dock, toolbar, clippings, locations, interior library folders, and more.

A comparison between this icon series, my South Beach Series, and my original Art Deco series is a great demonstration of the diversity within the Art Deco genre, and why it can be somewhat difficult to describe in a few short sentences. But, to paraphrase a line from (former) Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, “I know it when I see it!”

Deviation to Green Day & Zack

Posted by: • Date:

I’ve been temporarily interrupted from being able to post new icons due to a glitch with the server that hosts my originals. Hopefully Apple will resolve that within the next 24-48 hours. In the meantime, thought I’d take the opportunity to give you guys a treat with a (very short) clip from YouTube that someone had captured at a recent Green Day concert down in Nashville, Tennessee. Lead Singer Billy Joe had grabbed a fan from the audience and invited him to play with them (after having to first swear that he actually could play). The fan, Zack, is 17 years old and did his own fans and family proud taking over the lead guitar and singing along with the band.

Disclosure: Thirty-something years ago I used to baby-sit for Zack’s Mom, Robyn, who is the daughter of my foster-mother’s sister. How’s that for a convoluted Six-Degrees connection? 😉
